Do I Really Need a Big Fridge?

Well, not really here are some alternative food storage tips so you can live on a smaller fridge – they’re cheaper and use less electricity.

1. Fruits – They don’t need to be kept in the fridge. Instead, place apples, oranges, pears, bananas and other fruits in an attractive fruit bowl. Fruits are Fine for up to Five days at room temperature but keep them away from sunlight. The fruit bowl also looks good on the kitchen counter and reminds you to eat your fruits daily!

2. Tomatoes - Storing tomatoes in the fridge will cause them to lose flavor and develop a mealy texture. The best is to store them at a room temperature on the kitchen counter with stem-side down.

3. Eggs – Ever wonder why supermarkets never place, eggs at the chilled area? Just store them in a dry cabinet and rotate them every few days. This will prevent the air sac inside the egg from settling which will make the eggs go bad.

4. Sauces and condiments – Most commercially made condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise and salad dressing don’t need to be stored in the fridge because they contain preservatives to prolong their lifespan. So keep them on the kitchen counter or in the cabinet.

5. Milk - Buy the UHT sort in small cartons which are found on supermarket shelves instead of fresh milk that is stored at the chilled area. This way, you can keep the milk in a cool, dark cabinet and chill an hour before drinking.

Uniqueness of the Seabed: Romancing the Giant Clam

When scientists and marine biologists mention symbiosis, one can only begin to fathom the relationship between two different living creatures that live close together and depend on each other in a particular way, each getting particular benefits from the other in order to survive. How far you can fathom this feat depends upon what you see and sometimes even what you experience. If you have seen a giant clam in the wild (seabed), you will know how beautiful it is.

This enormous shellfish (Tridacna sp.) is the largest and heaviest of all the living mollusks. Like all bivalve mollusks, the shell consists of two valves. In the large giant clams the valves cannot close completely. The shell is extremely thick and lacks bony plates; when viewed from above; each valve has a 4 to 5 inward facing triangular projection. The mantle of the clam is visible between to shells, and is golden brown or yellow or green, although it may contain so many blue or purple spots that the overwhelming impression is of a beautiful iridescent colour. A number of pale or clear spots on the mantle, the soft fleshy part of the body, which are known as ‘windows’, function to allow sunlight to filter in through the mantle. With this light, the minute algae called zooxanthellae living in the mantle, photosynthesizes and secretes a waste that become food for the giant clam!

The mantle is completely fused with the exception of two holes (or ‘siphons’); the inhalant siphon is fringed with sensory tentacles, whilst the exhalent siphon is tube-like and is capable of expelling a large volume of water
if the clam’s shells close suddenly. Though the siphon enable it to filter plankton from the ocean’s movement, its symbiotic relationship with the algae is truly amazing. These creatures were created with a dependency on another, design to complement one another.

The algae did not wake up one day to find itself without a purpose. It was designed to be a purpose. Created to be at the beginning of the food chain, phytoplankton and algae produce more than 87% of the oxygen that we breathe; to feed the massive whale sharks, manta rays, mega mouths ( a kind of shark) and whatever else that require algae to function. Now the fact that the giant clam has been designed to be the protection and host to zillions of zooxantellae is also awesome! If animals could talk, sure the algae would not say to the clam, “I cook, you clean.” It must have said, “I cook, you eat. Just shelter me from the elements at night and sun me in the day. That’s all I need to cook for you. And for as long as I live, I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

To sit around and do nothing all day but eat, the giant clam has to be strong enough to withstand currents, to weather any storm and to proudly show the patterns that the algae has formed in their mantles. Finally, if the clam could respond, it would probably say, “I need you to be in my mantle, will you stay there with me forever???”

Eight Health Food Myths You Must Know!

Food provides nourishment and security. It can calm and stimulate us. Still, our emphasis on food makes us pretty gullible to many claims, some of which are questionable.

SHARK’S FIN SOUP

There’s no getting away from it-the shark’s fin is a prestigious marker for social occasions. A delicacy and a luxury item in Chinese cuisine, it is believed to increase virility and contain a high level of nutrition. However, research has shown that this is a myth. Not only will the consumption of shark’s fin disrupt the ocean’s ecosystem, the fin contains poisonous toxins. It’s a known fact that fish contains mercury and sharks are at the top of the list. So, when we consume shark’s fin soup, we are also taking in a lifetime of mercury stored in the shark as well.

MARGARINE

After binge on rice every morning, toasted bread with margarine would seem like a better choice for breakfast. After all, margarine is recognized to have less saturated fat and cholesterol. Unlike butter, margarine is made from polyunsaturated vegetable oil such as corn oil, suitable for vegan. But, the process of the product is daunting. Vegetable oil undergoes a hydrogenation process to solidify the margarine which will produce a high level of Trans Fatty Acids and man-made Trans-fats may be toxic to the body. Research has shown that margarine increases Low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (it’s the bad one) which has been linked to heart disease. Once the vegetable oil has passed the processing stage, all the original essential fatty acids are now gone, and all that’s left is plastic fat also known as margarine.

DECAF COFFEE

Late nights and lack of sleep combined with too much caffeine intake can really weigh down your health. Still, the fragrant aroma of roasted coffee beans is indeed irresistible and the healthier alternative would be to reach out for a decaf? Not really. While the general belief is that decaf coffee has no caffeine, studies have shown that decaf coffees and teas still retain small amounts of caffeine. In fact, there may be enough caffeine in some decaf varieties to interrupt a person’s sleep patterns. Still, coffee may have gotten a bad reputation all these years. Recent studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of heart disease and is a source of antioxidants. Of course, keep things in moderation-try to limit your intake to 3 cups a day.

SEA SALT

Sea salt is more nutritious than table salt. Not true! Sea salt is often extolled as being healthier compared to processed table salt that has lost mineral such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The only rationale behind the hype of sea salt is its impurities. Since sea salt is not washed or boiled to preserve the healthy minerals, when you consume sea salt, you’ll also consume the pollution, impurities and all. Both table salt and sea salt are similar other than its value. In fact, when you take table salt, you’re likely to consume 30% less sodium per teaspoon because it is produced in flakes, unlike sea salt which is in crystal form.

BIRD’S NEST SOUP

Another delicacy in Chinese cuisine, the bird’s nest comes from a species of swift renowned for building their nests with their saliva. Bird’s nest is a valuable commodity and is regarded to have high nutritive and therapeutic value. Women who religiously take it are longing for the proteins and minerals to help rejuvenate their skin and boost their immune system. Although it contains enzymes, salts, and mostly water, there is no scientific evidence to justify the claim, and as we all know, saliva is not nutritious. There was an incident written in the American Journal of Medical Science, where a Vietnamese man was poisoned from arsenic intoxication after consuming bird nest that was environmentally contaminated. So think twice before you glug down your next bowl of bird’s nest soup.

ARTIFICIAL SUGAR

Diet beverages seem to be the way to go lite because the effect a sugar overload has on our health is as obvious as our expanding waistlines. Artificial sugar is a sugar substitute with the same sweetness but minus the calories of sugar. The chemical terms for artificial sugar/ sweetener are saccharin, aspartame and sucralose. Some would consider them to be helpful, good for weight and diabetes management. Others consider artificial sugar/sweeteners to be little more than unhealthy and possibly responsible for a myriad of health problems, even contributing to obesity. Studies have shown that this man-made additive is addictive, and is proven with lab rats preferring water sweetened with saccharin to cocaine.

BAKED NOT FRIED

This line tends to have the uncanny power of influencing our buying decisions from a healthy standpoint, often to indicate lower levels of fat in the product. When we see crisps or snacks that claim this line, we automatically assume that baked not fried is the healthier option. It’s good to note, however, that baked not fried snacks are usually high in fat in the first place or contain just as much added fat as their fried counterparts. Frying or baking something that is already high in fat content is not going to reduce the amount of fat to begin with. There is also no guarantee that baking not frying means lesser calories. In the end, the better indicator of calories and amount of fat is still the nutrition information panel found on the product packaging.

GINSENG

Ginseng is a herbal remedy to lower cholesterol, reduce physical and mental stress and also an energy booster. In addition to its traditional role as a stress fighter, ginseng has shown great promise at reducing fatigue, increasing memory and even fighting off colds, flu. Before you rush out to the next Chinese herbal shop, keep in mind that ginseng does not have good scientific evidence to support any of the claims made from these alleged benefits of consuming this root. In 1998, news about contaminated ginseng was found in the U.S. that could damage liver and kidneys, interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and cause eye damage or cancer. For the price you pay, save your money for a more useful purpose.

Located in a wooded park area next to the popular Yoyogi Park, the shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed during World War II.

Various events and festivals are help throughout the year. The Imperial family members, particularly the current Emperor and Empress, frequent the shrine during special occasions. The shrine is packed on holiday, such as January 1 and November 3 (Emperor Meiji’s birthday). From the main observatory, you will get a 360-degree bird’s eye view of Tokyo. Grab a coffee there and pick a souvenir at the store before heading further up to the special observatory, where Mount Fuji can be seen in the distance. In the evenings, the city’s glittering neon lights are an amazing sight. You also can visit the Guinness World Records Museum on the ground floor as well.

Tsukiji

Although the massive Tsukiji fish market is not the best place to bring children, families can certainly visit the outer market to browse through the small shops and have a sushi breakfast
.

The market’s inner section is where licensed wholesalers

Auto Transmission Basics: How to Use the Gears Correctly

Cruising in an automatic car is such a breeze yet it’s surprising how many of us don’t know how to use the gears correctly! Here’s a quick run-through of the rudiments so you won’t risk damaging your gearbox.

Most automatic cars have three-speed transmissions and Overdrive is the fourth and highest speed. So if you’re driving with the 0/D button off, your car can only shift up to third gear. The 0/D should always be on in normal driving conditions because it lets the engine pick up slowly to give better fuel efficiency, putting less wear on the engine. There are situations that require you to switch off the O/D such as:

When driving up a shallow hill. Due to the incline, the transmission goes back and forth between third and overdrive to find the suitable gear to be in.

When overtaking another car on the highway. By forcing the transmission into third gear, it gives your engine more torque and therefore, able to accelerate fast enough to overtake the other car.

* 2 – Typically, second gear is used when the third gear fails to provide enough climbing power when going uphill. Second gear is also for when you need more traction to avoid spinning your wheels on muddy roads.

* L – This refers to first gear and most car manuals tell you to use this gear when going downhill on a steep slope. Why? On this gear you slow down the car using engine braking which holds back the car to let it roll down at a safe speed. This prevents the brakes from burning, from prolonged heat as a result of constantly stepping on the brakes.

Finding the right laptop has never been easier. Whether you need a workhorse for business travel or just want to surf the Internet. Here are some tips that will help you to find the perfect laptop.

Here are some TIPS that will help you to find the perfect laptop.

Size matters

If you’re always on the go and only need your laptop for short periods, the compact, ultra-light types are your best bets; they also keep shoulder strains at bay. But if you’re going to spend hours in front of your laptop, you may have to apt for a large display. Do note that this laptop is heavier and harder to lug around.

Store more

How much hard drive space do you need? If the laptop will serve as your primary computer, you need at least 120GB. But if it will only supplement your desktop system, a 60GB hard drive will do. Still, it is safer to go for a bigger hard drive so you won’t run out of space for important files in the future.

Password with Personality: Essential Strategies Hackers Use To Hack Your Password

Who knew e-mail passwords were so revealing? Most people choose words that come readily to mind. From the research from the 1200 anonymous computer user, found most fell into the following four genres. The lesson: don’t use these criteria to create your password.

Family Oriented

Occasional computer users with strong family ties pick family oriented words like their pet’s name or child’s birth date. While emotional value dictates the choices of this personality, it should be noted that over half chose some variation of their own name.

Fans

People who pick their favorite athletes, musicians, movie stars and cartoon characters want to ally themselves with the lifestyle the celebrity symbolizes. That Homer Simpson topped the charts raises more questions about human nature than it answers.

Fantasists

Self-obsessed and sexually preoccupied, slightly more men than women chose passwords like sexy and stud.

Cryptic

Security-conscious types chose seemingly random series of numbers and letters. Not so interesting, but safe.

The Most Important Things To Know Before Purchasing a PDA

Missing important dates? It’s time to get organized – with a little help from technology. If you’re thinking of upgrading your paper-plump Filofax to a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), look out for these features.

1. Handheld or palm?: Decide on whether you want a keyboard or a stylus. Palms are stylus or pen operated, whilst a handheld is larger and has a mini keyboard to it.

2. Screen:For image quality, check the screen resolution, which is measured by pixels per inch. The more pixels there are, the higher the resolution, the sharper the images. Generally, a palm with a 4-inch screen supports a resolution of 320 x 320. For handheld, a typical screen size of 6.5 inches supports 640 x 240 pixels.

3. Memory:This depends on your needs. If you need more than what’s usually offered, opt for expandable PDA that feature built-in expansion slots that allow additional plug-ins for an external memory card and USB ports.

4. Handling:With handheld, the keypads are tiny and may be annoying if you have large hands. Lefties should also note that PDA are designed for the right-handed.

5. Operating system (OS):There are three major operating systems available depending on the brand you get: Palm OS, Windows Mobile by Microsoft and Symbian OS. Windows Mobile is pretty popular mainly because it’s just like using Microsoft Windows.

6. Connectivity:To get on-line, you need a PDA with built-in Wi Fi or Bluetooth. Some PDA come with a PC Card or Compact Flash slot, where you can connect to the Internet using external cards.

More Megapixels, Better Camera?

Not necessarily! If you find that pictures from your 10 megapixel camera phone don’t stack up against those from your pal’s lower megapixel digital SLR camera, here’s why…

Sensor Size

How a digital camera works is: light lands on a sensor where pixels collect light and converts it into data. The more pixels packed onto a sensor, the higher the image resolution. The sensor size and pixels in a mobile phone is way smaller than the sensor found in a DSLR camera – bigger sensors have bigger light-catching pixels. To achieve a high resolution, camera phone makers pack as many tiny pixels as they can onto tiny sensors. The pixels in these point-and-shoots are not the same as the high-quality pixels found on DSLR cameras.
Noise

When you’re taking pictures at night under disco lights with your camera phone, a lot of heat is created, which is one of the ways “noise” is generated – not the audio sort, but it’s the rainbow colored random grains you sometimes see in pictures taken in a dim setting. A lower megapixel count with a bigger sensor on the other hand will produce cleaner images. Advanced digital camera models tone down the grains with noise reduction functions, a feature you normally won’t find on a camera phone.

Eight Extreme Situations You’d Never Survive

Food and water are necessities of life. Without them, life would not exist. Believe it or not, scientists have now found bacteria than survive without them.

Life Below Freezing

It is hard for life to survive and reproduce below the freezing point of water as ice crystals form, fatally rupturing cell walls. In 1992 scientists discovered a single-celled organism, “Methanococcoides burtonii”, which lives and grows at -2.5°C. Flexible cell walls and an ability to produce their own ‘antifreeze’ enable some bacteria to survive a chilling -20°C.

Life in Acid

Acid can eat through human flesh in a second, damaging cells and ultimately killing them. Yet there are some life forms, like the red algae “Cyanidium caldarium”, that have adapted to survive, and even thrive, in the most acidic of conditions, such as the hot volcano pools found in Yellowstone National Park.

Life Above Boiling

In 2003, scientists studying a volcanic vent 2 km under the sea and discovered a single-celled organism that can cope with temperatures of 121°C. They named it “Geogemma barossii”. Since then, these creatures have been found living happily under the enormous pressures found at the bottom of many of the world’s deepest oceans.

Life Without Air

In the vacuum of space there is practically no water or oxygen, and the intense cold and radiation are extremely harmful to most life. But experiments have shown that at least one strain of bacteria can survive for over six months in space, by hibernating. Bacteria could be hibernating on distant worlds with little water or oxygen, just waiting for the right conditions to blossom into life.

Life in Ice

This microorganism was discovered under 4 km of ice, just above Lake Vostok, Russia. Lake Vostok is a massive body of liquid water buried under the ice for 400,000 years. It may contain some very unusual life, having been isolated from the rest of the planet for so long.

Life under High Radiation Bombardment

The bacteria “Deinococcus radiodurans” can survive doses of radiation 3,000 times greater than that needed to kill a human being. Radiation destroys DNA but this creature has spare copies of the most vital bits, as well as speedy DNA repair mechanisms.

Life in Salt

Salt in large quantities can pose a danger to life because it sucks the water from cells. However, the organisms such as “Haloferax volcanii” have adapted to live in extremely salty conditions, and can even survive for thousands of years in dried-out salt lakes.

Rock-Eating Bacteria

Buried deep underground, well away from sunlight or oxygen, there exists one of the strangest forms of life on this planet. This strain of bacteria lives on hydrogen and carbon dioxide given off from the surrounding rock.

Water Facts of Life

Did you know the water facts of life?

The koala doesn’t drink water because the eucalyptus leaves given it enough water. The koala’s shelter is the eucalyptus tree. The trees give them their shelter from their leaves and branches.

Kangaroo rats are masters of desert survival. They drink little to no water at all but survive almost entirely on water metabolized from seeds eaten.

A giraffe can walk longer than a camel without water. That’s because the acacia leaves they eat are very moist. Also giraffes try to conserve their energy so they don’t often feel thirsty.

An elephant can smell water 3 miles away. When elephants drink, they can suck as much as 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water into their trunk at a time.

The walking catfish found in Southern Asia possesses a breathing organ to breathe atmospheric oxygen and can “walk” on land for long distances while the mangrove killifish, found in North and South America, can alter the way it breathes and often spends several months of every year out of the water to live in trees.

Unique Foods But Poisonous Offerings

A blow fish is believed to have enough poison to kill thirty adult. Early symptom can be traced in a body of the victim within 10 to 45 minutes after eating the fish. It begins with the feel of beat on the tongue and inside the mouth.

It’s weird but true. It is believed that most of seamen still enjoy eating blow fish even knowing that it is a poison fish. They claim that they know how to extract the poison. However, how deep is their knowledge about the blow fish poison; the second dangerous vertebrate animal after the poisonous golden frog (Phyllobates terribilis) from Colombians Ocean
Pacific?

Besides paralyzing the nerve vein, a blow fish poison can also kill us if we are not careful. To handle a blow fish, we have to use a thick hand gloves to avoid from being bitten by the fish. A blow fish or the scientific name Tetraodontidae has four big teeth at its upper and lower gum used to destroy the victim’s shell; e.g. Crustacean, Mollusca and red worms. The skin and its internal organ like the ovary, liver, intestine, muscle tissue and blood contain neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin which can kill people. The toxin can paralyze the muscle in conscious and the die because of asphyxia.

The blow fish is still a special traditional menu both known as fugu and bok-uh in Japan and Korea
even it is proven as a poisonous fish among the specialist. As a seasonal exotic menu (November to February), the customer has to be ready to spend about USD 43 to USD 286 for a plate of fugu. Fugu is a Japanese word for blow fish. The menu from blow fish flesh includes the Takifugu, Lagocephalus or Sphoeroides and Diodon species. Knowing about the poisonous of blow fish makes it one of the most famous and dangerous food. The chef has to have extreme exercise to learn how to prepare the fish without letting the dangerous toxin from being incurred to the flesh. In Japan, the government issues a special license for the chef and restaurant with the menu. However, there are several irresponsible chef and restaurant letting a bit of the toxin to the flesh in order to give a “flavor surprise” to customer without killing them.

The way of skill has to be done in conscientious in accordance to the fish part, which will be cooked separately. Most of the flesh can be eaten except for the gill, head, teeth, chin and fugu skin surface which need to be scraped off with special tool. After the fugu being cut and washed, it has to be cut into small pieces (2mm to 3mm) using a special knife called ‘hiki’ in order to prepare fugu sashimi or tessa. Tessa is prepared like a beautiful chrysanthemum shape wooden block; which is known as the death flower among the Japanese. It is served with the fugu skin sliced with sashimi or slice of uncooked fugu. Other than that, it can be cooked as soup using fugu flesh, bean curd, shitake mushroom and vegetables. The soup then to be cooked until it becomes condense by adding new recipe used to prepare zousui or porridge.

Summer Beauty: Fun Under the Sun

Next time you’re on your beach vacation, go ahead and have fun under the sun! But not before you hook up with these stay-safe-and-look-fabulous tips.

#1 – Don’t stop at just applying sunscreen on your face. Your poor lips need Sun Protection Factor too! Accumulated unprotected exposure to the sun alters the collagen make-up on your skin, causing lips to age prematurely. This is how fine lines and wrinkles form. Also, watch that you’re not susceptible to cold sores as sun exposure can trigger it.

#2 – Be fussy about fuzzy legs. Before shaving your legs be sure to exfoliate as this removes the layer of dead skin cells

Eight Step How to Take Awesome Pictures

Start capturing better pictures, whatever the subject, wherever you are and whichever camera you have. Here some little perspective you can use.

#1Take a series – Why take one pictures when you can take a series? Taking lots and lots of shots is the best way to see a picture of several squares stacked on the top of each other on your camera, those us the symbol for burst. One you enable the burst mode, it lets your camera take several shots per second. It’s really helpful when photographing freeze action of fast-paced moving subjects.

#2 Create space – Don’t think of it as a way of wasting your shots. By creating lots of empty space in the picture, it really highlights your subject and the eyes will automatically be drawn to it.

#3 Change your angle – Picture can get a little boring if they are taken from an eye-level, all the time. Get down on the ground to take down, or simply tilt the camera sideways for a whole new view.

#4 Reflect – Look for any smooth surface what will reflect your subject well e.g. a pond, polished car, surface or its side mirror, or a glass building. Then remember to focus on the subject’s reflect rather than on the surface itself.

#5 What composition? Just Shoot! – Point the camera and shoot without looking through the viewfinder. You’ll be surprised to see how some of the pictures turn out looking so spontaneous – or downright funny!

#6 Stunning silhouettes – Silhouette photos with the sunset as the background are simply breathtaking. If great sunset are hard to find, try this: get your subject to stand indoor with a bright, sunny sky outside. This will outline the subject thus making it a silhouette picture.

#7 Get closer-up – Want a dramatic impact? Zoom in close to your subject. It emphasises on the subject better or brings out details that are not in-your-face obvious. See the difference by first taking a whole subject in a frame. Then zoom in on important detail like a pattern or the texture of the subject. Bet you’ll be impressed!

#8 Black and white – Let’s go back to how photography
first began – the original black and white photos. Somehow, the monochromatic pictures bring out more mood in the pictures. So when it doubt, try adding a little drama by using the sepia/black-and-white mood. Or, use it to cover-up dull colour or hazy weather of the pictures you’re about to take.
